President Trump and his administration are trying to chip away at Americans’ voting rights with a commission that’s deceivingly called the Presidential Commission on Election Integrity.

It’s being helmed by Kris Kobach, the Kansas secretary of state, who the ACLU has nicknamed the “king of voter suppression” for implementing some of the strictest voter ID laws in the nation.

Kobach is trying to spark voter suppression efforts around the country. The commission already requested voter data from all 50 states — including personal identifying information such as addresses, dates of birth, political parties, the last four digits of social security numbers, and voting history.

Fortunately, Maryland’s attorney general saw the commission’s request for what it is: “repugnant” and “designed only to intimidate voters and to indulge Trump’s fantasy that he won the popular vote.”

President Trump’s commission is a problem not a solution. There is simply no evidence to back up President Trump’s wild claim that millions of voters voted illegally in the 2016 election. There is also no evidence that widespread voter fraud exists.

The right to vote is fundamental to our democracy. We can’t allow it to be chipped away at by a commission that is trying to create conspiracy theories and justify voter suppression to serve political interests.

In this political climate, we have to actively protect our right to vote. Tell Republicans to stop attacking it.
